At KBS, our internship program is designed to provide real-world experiences that help future accountants discover their passions, build technical skills, and gain confidence in their career choices. One of our interns, Clara Andre, a Senior at the Grossman School of Business at the University of Vermont, shared reflections on her time with us — here’s how the experience shaped her goals and perspective.
“My internship at Kittell Branagan & Sargent gave me the confidence to pursue a career in accounting.”
During her internship, Clara Andre gained hands-on experience in both tax and audit. She shared that the technical skills she developed were only part of the value; just as important was realizing that accounting is about people as much as it is about numbers.
“Moving forward, I want to carry that perspective into my career, developing strong client relationships while delivering accurate and meaningful financial work, just like the team at KBS.”
Clara was also surprised by how much technology shapes the day-to-day work of accountants.
“One thing that surprised me was how much of the accounting process is digital. In school, we often prepare financial statements on paper, so it was relieving to see how streamlined many of the processes are in practice. While calculations and analysis are still critical, technology makes it easier to focus on accuracy and efficiency.”
Her experience showed how technology not only enhances accuracy and efficiency but also allows accountants to focus more on meaningful, client-centered work.
Among the best advice she received: if you enjoy accounting and it makes sense to you, you’re in the right place. Encouragement from her mentors to consider a Master of Accountancy and prepare early for the CPA exam gave her clarity and direction for her career path.
One standout moment for Clara was participating in two field audits, where she not only observed but also contributed meaningful work for a client.
“I felt proud to apply what I’d learned in the classroom to real situations and see the impact of my efforts. It gave me confidence in my abilities and a deeper appreciation for accounting.”
